Good riddance to the New Haven Coliseum

APRIL 2, 2007        TAGS: ARCHITECTURE, DESIGN         ADD A COMMENT
One of Kevin Roche's most loathed civic structures came tumbling down on the morning of January 20 to the cheers of almost 20,000 New Haven residents perched upon a parking garage adjacent to the building. Erected in 1972, the Coliseum had been slated for destruction for almost two years. But the City of New Haven, citing a lack of funds, delayed the implosion three times. Branded as an eyesore due to its unconventional placing of a steel-girded parking garage atop the massive concrete arena, the Coliseum now lies as a pile of twisted steel and rubble.
