Heath Ledger, Gone Too Soon at 28

Heath Ledger died today on January 22, 2008. We now must say goodbye to this remarkable young actor, many years earlier than anyone expected.
The LA Times recounts that it was the actor's "chiseled good looks [that] made him a heartthrob to millions and who won movie fame for playing a tragic homosexual cowboy" in Brokeback Mountain. The Australian actor won an Academy Award nomination for the 2005 movie.
Ledger was found unconscious at 3:26 p.m. and pronounced dead minutes later by emergency medical personnel, said Det. Madelyne Galindo, a spokeswoman for the New York Police Department.
Born in Perth, Western Australia, Ledger had a two-year-old daughter, Matilda, with former fiancee and Brokeback Mountain co-star Michelle Williams.
According to the Sydney Morning Herald, less than an hour after news of Ledger's death broke, fan sites including heathledger.net, heathbaby.com and heathledgercentral.com and heathledger.com had melted down and were inaccessible. Already, at least two "R.I.P Heath Ledger" Facebook groups have been created as memorials.
