Alexander Hamilton was the 1st Secretary of the Treasury and a member of President George Washington’s quarrelsome cabinet. He advocated for a strong central bank to assist the growth of a robust economy of industry, which was in opposition to Thomas Jefferson’s vision of America as an agrarian utopia. Hamilton was killed in a legendary duel with Aaron Burr on July 12, 1804.
